Galaxy Nexus Review

The ‘Nexus’, a series of phones which is supposed to put the absolute best that can be achieved with the Android operating system on a pedestal and show it off to the consumer world. First there was the Nexus One, developed by HTC which was the flagship phone for Android 2.2, next came the Nexus S, developed by Samsung which became the flagship phone for Android 2.3. With a new variant of Android slowly being released, Samsung have given us the Galaxy Nexus which will no doubt be highlighting everything that is great about Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
In the past everything seemed slow and unresponsive on Android compared to iOS (The iPhone’s operating system), With the latest update this appears to be a thing of the past. Everything is smooth, fast and polished. Of course the phone’s beefy hardware has helped this, sporting a dual core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and a dedicated GPU its power can be compared to and even surpasses many netbooks or low end laptops. In short, it’s a beast!
The screen is also something to marvel easily surpassing the iPhone’s retina display. Sporting a 720p super AMOLED screen the colours are bright and viewing angles are fantastic. But the key point here is the AMOLED screen which turns off pixels that aren’t being used . This has 2 side effects: The first being convincing blacks, the second being as the pixel is actually switched off it is saving you precious battery life which of course as we all know is vital in this ‘phone needs charging every night’ world we live in.
Android 4.0 also adds a lot of new features to the phone such as voice dictation (Android’s answer to Siri), quick responses for incoming calls, improved spell checking, more functions for the camera and more uses of cloud computing (one interesting one is uploading photos to your Google account instantly as they’re taken, worry not though as it is only you that can see them!) A cool new function is the ability to unlock the phone using your face! Basically once set up if the phone recognises you as the owner it will unlock the phone, just make sure you trust your twin!
This phone is aimed at phone enthusiasts and gadget geeks alike and is a solid contender to the iPhone’s dominance.
